From WW2 and maybe earlier, the US tries to position itself as a good guy on the world stage. It’s a good strategy to follow because over time you’ll gain a perceived moral high ground over people that are not as considerate. This helps your public support at home and your overall geopolitical standing. This became the normal “modus operandi” for most “western” counties. But lately, Israel seems to be taking a different approach.
The Contagious Spirit of FEAR
When you’re a terror organization one of the biggest things you try to achieve is fear. With fear they force their enemies to react negatively and in turn trust their people less. For example, without 9/11 you would not have to go through this much trouble at airports. There are other organizations who wield the sword of fear as a tool, the Mossad. Unlike other national intelligence agencies, Mossad loves the limelight. You don’t ever really hear news about CIA pulling off feats and assassinations unless it’s 40 years old. For Mossad it’s much different, like the killing of Iranian nuclear scientist Mostafa Roshan, it’s like they want you to know it was them.
Now that Israel was attacked by Hamas and exchanging attacks with Hezbollah, consciously or unconsciously they’re establishing that old Mossad fear but on a country wide level. There’s an unwritten geopolitical rule that you should not skip over proxy forces and attack the power that’s supporting them. The US, Soviets and Chinese played by that rule all throughout the cold war. This rule is respected to this day, Russia is not going to attack a country for supplying Ukraine. The US does not attack Iran directly for supplying the Houthis and giving them targeting information. Unless a country personally attacks you, you should not touch them.
